‘On the difference between the syllables/voices [stimmen]. From the above mentioned six syllables two are called b molles, ut and fa, because they are finely, gently, softly, lovely and weakly sung. They both have the same nature and character and therefore, whenever one is sung, the other may be sung as well. Re and sol are called medium or natural syllables, because they produce an intermediate sound, neither too gentle nor too sharp [scharff]. Mi and la are called b durales, that is, sharp and hard syllables, because they should and must be sung in a more masculine and bold way than the bmolles and the naturals. This difference, when it is noted, and rightly observed in singing, will make all melodies sweet and lovely. That is why it should be one of the first things impressed upon the boys [knaben], and they should be made accustomed to it, in order that they become precisely aware of this distinction.’
‘Von unterscheid der stimmen. Aus den obgemelten sechs stimmen werden zwo bmolles genant, als ut und fa, denn sie werden gar fein, linde, sanfft, lieblich und weich gesungen. Sie sind auch einerley natur und eigenschafft, darümb, wo eine gesungen wird, do mag auch die andere gesungen werden. Re und sol werden mittelmessige odder natürliche stimmen genennet, drümb das sie einen mittelmessigen laut von sich geben, nicht zu gar linde, odder zu scharff. Mi und la heissen b durales, das ist, scharffe und harte syllaben, denn sie sollen und müssen menlicher und dapfferer gesungen werden denn die bmolles und naturales. Diese unterscheid, wo sie wol gemerckt, und im gesang recht gehalten wird, macht sie alle melodey süsse und lieblich.
